Government Crackdown on Non Surgical Cosmetic

ľ¹ÏÊÓƵ supports Government crackdown on Unregulated Cosmetic Procedures

The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (ľ¹ÏÊÓƵ) is delighted with the UK government announcement today that they have committed to introducing a licensing regime for non-surgical procedures such as Botulinum Toxins and Dermal Fillers.

ľ¹ÏÊÓƵ CEO Lesley Blair,

"After so many years of campaigning for further regulation of our industry – including contributing and providing evidence to the APPGs and other industry authorities, BABTAC are delighted that the government has today announced that they intend to introduce a nationwide licensing regime for non-surgical cosmetic procedures such as botulinum toxins and fillers"

In the last couple of years there has been a real increase in the popularity of non-invasive treatments or 'tweakments' such as these injectables. A recent report* from Mintel found that 43% of UK adults view non-surgical procedures as a part of a normal beauty grooming routine. A scary thought considering a consumer survey** ľ¹ÏÊÓƵ ran back in 2019 indicated that only 38% of consumers knew the industry was unregulated while 70% believed that there was legislation to ensure standardisation of all training – which is far from the case. This is not to say there are not plenty of responsible and fully qualified practitioners out there, because there are, its just identifying who they are that is not that simple for consumers.

Lesley says“ Given these insights, the confirmation that government is committing to further regulation in the beauty industry is more important than ever, especially when considering that if done incorrectly, injectables can lead to permanent facial damage including blindness, paralysis, distortion and even necrosis of the skin tissue. So with injectables in particular it is critical that a legal and qualified prescribing practitioner is on site to manage any complications should they arise”
